Press Release:

Creo Announces The Leaf Aptus Digital Camera Back

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA–(CCNMatthews – Sept. 7, 2004) – Creo Inc. (NASDAQ:CREO – News; TSX:CRE – News) announces the latest generation of portable and studio digital camera backs – the Leaf® Aptus. This new product line has the portability and ease-of-use of consumer products, combined with the robustness, resolution and powerful workflow required by professional photographers. The Leaf Aptus product line includes the Leaf Aptus 22 and Leaf Aptus 17 digital camera backs with resolutions of 22 and 17 megapixels respectively.

Easy Operation

The Leaf Aptus digital camera back contains a built-in, large (6 x 7 cm) LCD enabling practical image evaluation, focus confirmation and editing. The integrated compact flash allows for easy shooting. A single rechargeable lithium ion battery can provide power for over 1,000 frames in over four hours of continuous operation.

Robust Shooting with Top Speed

New hardware boosts the 1.2 seconds per frame capture rate to provide a continuous non-stop burst of lossless raw HDR files. Each shot can be stored directly to the 20 GB Leaf Digital Magazine that holds up to 2,000 frames, depending on back configuration, or to an external FireWire® portable drive of 250 GB or larger, allowing for extremely productive shooting.

Efficient Workflow with Touch Screen Control

The Leaf Aptus is the world’s first camera back with a touch screen and a graphic user interface (GUI) that provides the ability to easily and quickly prepare custom job setups. Files can be pre-named, job folders created, files flagged and edited on location to speed-up workflow.

Unique wireless display technology is also built into the Aptus. By using the Leaf DP-67, a portable display or digital proof based on the HP iPAQ pocket PC, the client or art director can see instant previews away from the camera. This workflow enhances teamwork on location.

The Leaf Aptus digital camera back also integrates a new compressed raw HDR (CHDR) file format. This format decreases the size of raw HDR files by half with lossless compression that retains 100 percent of the original data. This speeds up shooting, doubles effective storage capacity, and makes archiving and file transmission twice as efficient.

Availability and Upgrade Options

The Leaf Aptus digital camera back will be introduced at Photokina 2004 in Cologne, Germany at the Creo Leaf stand. Commercial shipments will begin in February 2005. Photographers who would like to take advantage of the new Leaf Aptus can start work today with a new Leaf Valeo 22Wi or Leaf Valeo 17Wi digital camera back and upgrade later to the Aptus. Attractive upgrade options for existing digital photographers are also available. For more information, contact Leaf at www.creo.com/leaf.

Upstart designer talks to MTV News about getting the ultimate look after rap titan dons the label’s signature cap at Austin concert.
By Rebecca Thomas

He made the Yankee cap hotter than anyone in pinstripes ever could. But on Monday night in Austin, Texas, Jay-Z shelved the New Era snapback and topped his denim ensemble with a printed ball cap by Leroy Jenkins. In a flash, the man who bleeds blue gave the upstart designers the ultimate co-sign — as a packed SXSW crowd (and millions watching Hov’s solo show via live stream) took it all in.

On Tuesday afternoon (March 13), MTV News caught up with Leroy Jenkins founder and creative director Ron Upperman just as he headed out to re-up on floral fabric for the company’s caps, which were now, of course, sold out. Upperman, who typically roams NY sporting the toppers, explained how Jay copped the accessory and what it means to have the God MC wearing his wares.

“A friend of ours is a backup dancer for Santigold, and she was in a car in Austin on the way to the show when she noticed it from the live stream,” the New Jersey-dweller recalled. Upperman got a message from another friend not long after: ”Hey, you know Jay is wearing your hat right now?” the friend informed him and passed along a link to the stream. Soon, the calls of surprise and congratulation were pouring in.

“I was just flattered; that’s the top guy right there,” Upperman said of seeing the Roc Nation mogul in LJ.

While Upperman and Leroy Jenkins art director Upendo Taylor founded the apparel company back in 2005 as a natural outlet for their fine art and graphic design pursuits, the pair had taken an 18-month hiatus after being bruised by the recession. Having re-emerged invigorated, they turned their focus to stitching their line back together. The collection would balance the new with cult faves from the line — including that Black Palms Jungle ball cap seen at SXSW.

“A friend of ours who works at [Jay-Z's] Roc-a-Wear told me he went to work in the hat and Jay noticed it and asked if he could slide him one,” the creative director said. “I figured maybe Jay would wear it just to hang out at home or whatever. Maybe he might get snapped by a photographer in it.”

Or maybe not; the ever-laid-back Upperman had no big expectations. In fact, the label prides itself, he added, on moving their high-fashion hoodies, pants and hats organically, rather than chasing celebrity placements like some brands.

Now that they’ve won Jay over, we wondered whether the label has its eye on any other artists.

“Kanye West,” Upperman said after some thought. “Because our line is for guys who’ve already gone beyond streetwear.”
