Epson announces R-D1 availability
From dpreview.com
Epson has announced that the world’s first digital rangefinder camera, the R-D1 is to begin shipping in the US on November 1 and is expected to cost around $2,999. The Epson R-D1, which is the first digital camera to use L- and M-mount lenses, conveys the classic feel of a rangefinder and offers 6.1 megapixelsm and an APS C-sized sensor.
Press Release: LONG BEACH, Calif. Oct. 21, 2004– New Digital Rangefinder System is the First Digital Camera to Support L/M-Mount Lenses
Epson America Inc. has achieved another digital photography breakthrough with the introduction of the EPSON(R) R-D1 — the world’s first rangefinder digital camera. This camera was introduced in Japan earlier this year and will now be shipping in the United States in early November.
The EPSON R-D1 marks a significant milestone in the industry by combining the classic feel and precision engineering of a traditional rangefinder camera with the latest digital technology. It is the first digital camera allowing photographers to use revered L- and M-mount lenses.
The EPSON R-D1 links the future with the past — a new digital camera with a classic rangefinder feel. The EPSON R-D1 is comprised of a magnesium alloy exterior and an aluminum die cast body, combining digital technology with the traditional feel of a finely tuned instrument. The camera features a 6.1 megapixel APS C-size CCD sensor with a 1.53 magnification factor for an image resolution up to 3008 x 2000 pixels, easily producing output of 16″ x 20″ and beyond. The Epson R-D1 supports a RAW mode as well as two JPEG modes. Both JPEG modes incorporate PRINT Image Matching(R) II technology for optimal prints.
“Epson is committed to the world of photography and has helped transform digital photo printing by developing ink jet printers and other digital photo printing technologies,” said Philip Amato, product manager, Epson. “With the EPSON R-D1 we aimed to combine all that defines classic rangefinder photography with today’s leading edge digital technology. Photographers can now experience a state-of-the-art digital camera with all of the advantages of a rangefinder camera.”
The legendary rangefinder camera has been used by many of the world’s greatest photographers. In keeping with this heritage, Epson designed the EPSON R-D1 to offer the creative possibilities and convenience of digital technology, while maintaining the classic rangefinder’s look, feel and functionality. Designed with time-honored features and precision engineering, the camera brings together the best qualities of conventional rangefinders with the advanced image processing of contemporary digital cameras.
“It’s finally arrived, the EPSON R-D1 is a true digital rangefinder camera that allows photographers like myself to work in the digital world with a classic rangefinder using the prized lenses we have accumulated over the years and know so well,” said Ben Fernandez, award winning photojournalist, Guggenheim Fellow and sought after photo educator. “The EPSON R-D1 enables me to continue working with the same tools that I have grown accustom to throughout my career, and transition seamlessly, without compromise, into the new age of digital photography.”
Digital Technology with Classic Feel
The EPSON R-D1 maintains a traditional rangefinder camera feel through its body style. With many of the camera’s mechanical features reminiscent of the past, the EPSON R-D1 is traditional, yet uniquely modern. Features have been designed to function in a new capacity such as the film rewind knob, which has been transformed into a jog dial that enables photographers to scroll through images on the LCD. Additionally, the film advance lever actually re-cocks the mechanical shutter after a digital image has been taken, and chronographic dials and needle indicators bring back memories of precision-made watches. To indicate the number of frames available, the camera’s outer scale is marked 500-0, while other indicators show the white balance setting, the resolution, image quality setting and battery power level.

From dpreview.com
Epson has today introduced the PhotoPC L-410 digital camera which features a four megapixel CCD sensor and three times optical zoom lens. This new camera extends Epson’s range of digital cameras to three which include the PhotoPC L-300 and L-400 which were announced in April of last year. Naturally the L-410 supports direct printing via USB using the Print Image Matching II protocol (not stated however is whether it supports the more popular Direct Print).
Press Release: New Compact Digital Camera Features High-Speed Continuous Shooting in Addition to Unique PRINT Image Framer(R) Feature
Epson America, Inc. is once again focusing its efforts on capturing important memories with the introduction of the EPSON PhotoPC(R) L-410. The EPSON PhotoPC L-410 is a compact, four megapixel digital camera that incorporates high-speed continuous shooting, records video clips and offers a new creative feature called PRINT Image Framer, which adds fun frames to any photo with a touch of a button.
The EPSON PhotoPC L-410 is ideal for anyone that wants to capture important memories easily and quickly, without having to compromise quality. In addition to its 4.0 megapixel CCD sensor, this compact and sleek camera includes a 3x optical zoom and a 3x digital zoom, a 1.5 inch high-quality LCD screen and PRINT Image Matching(R) II technology for simply producing the best possible prints on PRINT Image Matching-enabled photo printers.
“Capturing and preserving memories is becoming more and more important to today’s digital camera customer and the EPSON PhotoPC L-410 makes it simple and fun to take photos anytime and anywhere,” said Daniel Oey, senior product manager, digital cameras, Epson. “With the many Epson photo printing solutions available today, customers can confidently print these precious memories knowing that they will look amazing for years to come.”
Continuous Shooting with the EPSON PhotoPC L-410
Not only can the EPSON PhotoPC L-410 capture beautiful images, but it captures them fast with a new high-speed continuous shooting mode. The camera can capture up to three photos per second, at the highest resolution, until the user’s optional, high-speed memory card is full. This feature is ideal for capturing a variety of activities, including outdoor events such as soccer or baseball games. The EPSON PhotoPC L-410 is also fully automatic for fast, point-and-shoot functionality and it has a manual mode for added control.
PRINT Image Framer
The EPSON PhotoPC L-410 incorporates a new creative feature, PRINT Image Framer (P.I.F.). P.I.F. is a feature that is specifically designed to work with select Epson Stylus Photo printers and the PictureMate personal photo lab. Essentially, this new technology gives customers the ability to add a frame to any image they choose simply by pressing the P.I.F. button on the back of the camera. Frames will not affect the original image and they can be added without having to connect to a computer. It’s as easy as selecting a frame design from a selection of over 100 frames and choosing a photo. Frames can even be chosen before a photo is taken.
Customers who want more creative freedom can actually design their own frames by using the included software (PRINT Image Framer Designer) and can even personalize existing frames. The newly created frames can be uploaded to the camera using the included software (PRINT Image Framer Tools). This unique feature adds a fun and more creative way for customers to express themselves through their photos.
Convenient Printing with the EPSON PhotoPC L-410
In addition to the convenience of direct printing with P.I.F., the EPSON PhotoPC L-410 can also print one or more of the photos on the memory card without ever having to connect to a computer. With the camera’s compatibility with Direct Print and USB-DP to select Epson printers, printing without a computer has never been simpler. The customer can even press a print button on the back of the camera to quickly and easily select images for printing. The EPSON PhotoPC L-410 also supports PRINT Image Matching II and Exif 2.2 (Exif Print).
Storage Capacity and Batteries
The camera includes built-in 16MB of memory, which gives customers the ability to take snapshots right away, but for those customers that require more storage, the EPSON PhotoPC L-410 supports SecureDigital(TM) memory cards up to 512 MB. The EPSON PhotoPC L-410 comes with one CR-V3 battery and also accepts two AA alkaline, Ni-Cd or NiMH batteries. An optional AC adapter will also be available.

Epson P-1000 Photo Viewer
From dpreview.com CES 2004: Epson has today announced the P-1000 Photo Viewer, a 10 GB storage unit with a large 3.8″ VGA LCD display designed as an advanced portable digital photoframe. The P-1000 has a Compact Flash slot (other media supported via adapters) and TV out as well as connectivity to Epson Printers for direct print. But the features keep coming, the P-1000 can also be connected directly to a computer via USB for transfer or a USB CD writer for archival. This product has been available in Europe for some time.
Press Release: New Portable Photo Viewing and Storage Device Boasts Beautiful 3.8” LCD Panel Designed by a World Leader in LCD Technology
LONG BEACH, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Jan. 5, 2004 — Digital photographers will welcome the arrival of the EPSON P-1000, a new device for viewing, storing and sharing photos that incorporates a high quality Epson 3.8″ LCD screen for the best image quality. Digital photography is evolving and changing as are many photographers’ needs. Epson is helping to address these changing needs with the EPSON P-1000 photo viewer. This device gives photographers the ability to view details of their images with an LCD screen that sets it apart from any other product of its kind. Epson is a leading producer of LCD modules and has incorporated this technology expertise into devices such as AV projectors, digital cameras, cellular telephones and Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs). With Epson’s introduction of the first LCD digital quartz watch over 30 years ago, to recently becoming the world leader in cellular telephone LCD displays, the EPSON P-1000 is a logical extension of this long heritage of LCD technology.
In addition to its high-resolution screen, the sleek and sophisticated looking EPSON P-1000 has a 10 GB hard drive and can print directly to select Epson printers. This convenient product enables photographers to simply take their CompactFlash memory card out of their digital camera, pop it into the EPSON P-1000 and download and print the images with ease.
“The Epson P-1000 is a breakthrough product for Epson that sets the bar extremely high for other portable devices of its kind,” said Daniel Oey, senior product manager, digital input products, Epson. “The screen resolution is simply amazing and allows photographers to see the details of their images clearly and easily without having to download them and view them on a computer screen. Whether shooting for work or play, this is a convenient viewing and storage solution for a variety of people.”
Viewing and Sharing Photos on the Epson P-1000
Epson is continuing to build on its reputation for incredible image quality with the Epson P-1000 and its 3.8″ VGA Epson LCD screen. This portable product displays every detail of downloaded images with vibrancy and clarity, unlike the viewing panels on most digital cameras and other viewers, which provide a smaller and less clear visual of what the photo actually looks like. The difference is that the EPSON P-1000 display offers three colors per individual pixel and a higher density of 212 pixels per inch (PPI), compared with one color per pixel and 100 PPI on a typical digital camera display. This gives the EPSON P-1000 the ability to display an impressive 262,144 colors and a remarkable, high resolution image.
To make viewing photos even more convenient, with the EPSON P-1000 the user can zoom in and rotate images to inspect them closely. Users can even play back the images as a slideshow for viewing and sharing quickly and easily. If the user wants to share images on an even bigger screen, the photo viewer has a video interface–NTSC or PAL–that can connect directly to a television, monitor or projector with video input.
Storing and Preserving Photos with the EPSON P-1000
The EPSON P-1000 is equipped with a 10 GB hard disk drive for storing thousands of images at a time, including images as large as 6 megapixels and it supports both JPEG (Exif 2.1 and 2.2) and raw file formats for select SLR cameras. With this large amount of storage, the customer can copy photos to the EPSON P-1000 from the memory card and clear the memory card immediately to begin taking more pictures. When all of the images have been downloaded to the photo viewer from the memory card, the viewer can then be connected to a computer or even to an external USB CD-R/RW drive to back up the images to ensure they are saved.
With its built-in memory card slot, the EPSON P-1000 is compatible with most digital camera memory types. It offers native support for CompactFlash Type I and II, and IBM Microdrive(TM) and can support Memory Stick(R), Smart Media(TM), Secure Digital and Multi Media Card with an optional third-party adapter (sold separately).
Printing from the EPSON P-1000
The EPSON P-1000 wouldn’t be a complete photographer’s tool without the ability to print directly to an Epson printer. This versatile product offers the capability to print directly to several Epson printers including the EPSON Stylus Photo 820, Stylus Photo 900, Stylus Photo 1280 and Stylus Photo 2200. The EPSON P-1000 also supports PRINT Image Matching II and Exif 2.2 (Exif Print) for achieving the best looking prints possible.
Additional Features
When connected to a Windows or Macintosh computer, the EPSON P-1000 acts as an external, portable USB hard disk drive. Pricing and Availability
The EPSON P-1000s will be available by early January through distribution, mail order and on the Epson retail Web site (www.epsonstore.com) for a price of $599. The product carries a one-year warranty and is supported by the EPSON Connection(SM), a customer support and technical assistance line.
