City Living: Interior designer Kelly Hoppen on life as a Londoner

Superior Interiors presenter Kelly Hoppen reveals what she loves about living in London and her tips on enjoying what the capital has to offer.

Kelly Hoppen Kelly Hoppen loves the London vibe

Iave lived in London since I was two. It gets cooler every year. You can be anonymous or the complete opposite. Itas a great place to live.

I love the old markets a Columbia Road, Portobello, Kempton, all the traditions of London. If I go food shopping I prefer to go to a market rather than a supermarket. Itas very inspiring that we still have that culture.

You have to get on the property ladder. Even if you can just afford a box, buy it. Renting is such a waste of money. If you buy in the right place and do the property up you can sell it on and make money. You can buy slightly outside the centre aA in the East End, or Kensal Rise or Queens ParkA in the west.

You can add value to your home by putting really nice shutters up, sanding the floors, putting wallpaper up. You can dress your home in a asuperficiala way but it makes it look and feel nicer.

Never follow trends if youare buying to make money a you have to think about what other people want. Keep it neutral and think about what youad want to see when you look for your next place.

If I design a piece of furniture itall be copied at a high-street level a great pieces are available at all price ranges. You can get great kitchens from B&Q. There are bargains all over town.

If a room is small, donat paint it too dark. Also be conscious of lighting. Make sure window treatments donat affect natural light.

Think about how you live and plan accordingly. Ask yourself if you bathe or shower a if you donat have room for both, just put in a shower. People spend more time in their kitchens so you donat need a dining room. Have a fabulous table in your kitchen a youall use it more. That leaves more space for a bedroom and bathroom.

How do you translate perfume into rugs? Roubini Rugs has created a new line of luxury rugs based on the design style of the house of Clive Christian. Some of the designs in the line were inspired by precious ingredients from perfumes in his eponymous perfume collection as well as his interior design projects. Clive Christian created unique artwork which in turn Sam Roubini translated and produced in the finest wool and silk.

The rug shown above, the Portrait No. 1 Rug, shows a cherub holding a garland leaning on an architectural ledge. The image was taken from the Toile de Jouey fabrics used within Clive Christian rooms.

Roubini Rugs has a variety of designer rugs for fashionable homes including collections by Fornasetti, Tuleh, Jamie Drake, Karim Rashid, Roberto Cavalli and Missoni.

Black and White (and a Bit in Between) Timeless Interiors, Dramatic Accents, and Stylish Collections
Written by Celerie Kemble

Hardcover, 256 pages | Clarkson Potter | House & Home – Decorating; Architecture – Interior Design; Architecture – Decoration & Ornament | $50.00 | November 1, 2011 | 978-0-307-71598-2 (0-307-71598-1)

Black and white décor is at once dramatic and understated, modern and classic, apparent in the work of iconic designers such as Dorothy Draper and Madeleine Castaing but just as present in design today. And the inspiration is all around us—from nature (a zebra’s stripes, tree trunks rising from drifts of snow) to old Hollywood movies and fashion to black-and-white photography and patterns we encounter in our everyday lives (crossword puzzles and the pages of our favorite novels).

In Black and White (and a Bit in Between), acclaimed interior designer Celerie Kemble trades in her signature vivid palette for this iconic aesthetic, highlighting the black and white work of design stars and peers, including Bunny Williams, Thomas O’Brien, Mary McDonald, Victoria Hagan, Mark Hampton, Delphine Krakoff, Brad Ford, Philip Gorrivan, Carrier and Co., and Miles Redd, and welcoming you into more than 100 spaces in every imaginable aesthetic. Woven throughout are her witty observations and expert advice on choosing the best paints and finishes, adding patterns and accessories, building an entire room scheme based on inspiration found in nature, collecting black and white objects, and even choosing the perfect accent colors.

With more than 350 gorgeous color photographs, this is a vividly photographed celebration of a timeless scheme, infused with inspirational tips, glimpses into showstopping homes, and proof that a limited palette is anything but.

Expressive Modern The Interiors of Amy Lau
Written by Amy Lau

Hardcover, 216 pages | The Monacelli Press | Architecture – Interior Design; House & Home – Decorating | $50.00 | October 11, 2011 | 978-1-58093-308-7 (1-58093-308-4)

Vivid color, specially commissioned artisanal pieces, and exquisite midcentury furnishings define the work of interior designer Amy Lau. Inspired by her passion for nature and abstract art, she incorporates elements of both into every space while tailoring each experience to the personalities and lifestyles of her clients.

Thirteen residential interiors, from glass-walled city apartments to demure Hamptons cottages, are presented in luscious full-color photography; lifely text peppered with design tips captures the designer’s energy and explains her creative process. Prior to opening her firm in 2001, Lau managed the prestigious Lin/Weinberg Gallery in New York City—specialisits in twentieth-century furniture and decorative objects—and her love of this period permeates her work to this day. Her designs are sophisticated yet exuberant and full of impeccably restored original pieces yet entirely livable.

Amy Lau’s belief in curating rather than merely decorating spaces results in collections arranged to complement the most unique feature of each individual object, color schemes that relate to a property’s location or enhance a specific view, and in one-of-a-kind textiles designed to subtly mirror a room’s other artwork or furnishings. A final chapter details the artists, movements, places, and visionaries that have had the largest influence on Lau’s development of her own unique style, and encourages all interested in design to create a similar catalog of admired pieces in order to begin refining and defining their own tastes.
