In a rare honor for a living person, the Navy plans to announce it is naming a new destroyer after Fall River native Thomas J. Hudner, 87, who earned the Medal of Honor in the Korean War for intentionally crashing his fighter plane in an attempt to save his wingman, the Navyas first black pilot. The decision, made by Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, is the culmination of a lobbying campaign championed last month by both Senators Scott P. Brown and John F. Kerry.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner on Sunday tried to discredit what has become one of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romneyas favorite campaign factoids: 92.3 percent of the jobs lost under President Obama belonged to women. The figure is technically accurate, but Geithner argued it is unfair to look only at the latter portion of an economic downturn that began before Obamaas inauguration. Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin was spot on. Galvin predicted before Tuesdayas Republican presidential primary that between 350,000 and 400,000 voters would turn out. In fact, 367,418 voters cast ballots, or 14 percent of Massachusettsa total Republican and unenrolled voters. The Massachusetts race was not heavily contested. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney won easily, with 72 percent of the vote.

Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin predicted that between 350,000 and 400,000 voters will cast ballots in Tuesdayas Republican presidential primary. Galvin said turnout is likely to be higher than in 1996, the last time there was no contested Democratic primary. That year, Republican Bob Dole had only weak competition from Pat Buchanan, and just 290,000 ballots were cast in the Republican primary. aThis will be a little stronger than a96,a Galvin said, since the outcome of the presidential race is still up in the air.

Voter turnout in Tuesdaysa primaries dropped dramatically in both Michigan and Arizona, compared to the last presidential election. According to the Michigan Secretary of Stateas office, 1.21 million voters cast ballots on Tuesday, or 16.6 percent of registered voters. That is a big drop from 2008, when 1.49 million voters voted, or 20.9 percent of registered voters. Those numbers are not entirely comparable, since there were contested primaries in both parties in 2008, but only on the Republican side this year.

The number of registered voters in Massachusetts has dropped since the 2010 elections a but grown since the 2008 presidential primary, according to new statistics released by the Secretary of Stateas office. The percentage of registered Democrats has dropped since 2008. Brian McNiff, a spokesman for the Secretary of Stateas office, said the shifts mostly reflect the nature of the current race, rather than any broader demographic trend.
